Flinders University is expanding its Factory of the Future – a world class advanced manufacturing facility designed to bring together industry, education and researchers.

The new facility will also be home to the Tonsley Technical College, a State Government Department for Education (DfE) initiative supporting students in years 10 to 12 to complete the SACE while undertaking vocational education and training (VET) to help address state’s skills shortages, including in the construction industry.

Designed by one of South Australian leading architects, Das Studio, the new building will be the first in South Australia to be constructed using Cross Laminated Timber – an innovative engineered wood product, with exceptional structural and sustainable outcomes, manufactured in South Australia by NeXTimber, along with Glue Laminated Timber beams and columns supplied by Australian Sustainable Hardwoods (ASH).

One of the most interesting and rewarding aspects of heritage work is the integration of new facilities into existing buildings, thoughtfully designed to meet the requirements of statutory authorities and the expectations of our clients.

Sarah has a long-standing relationship with the University of Adelaide, and recently we were engaged to design and construct a disability-compliant amenities block adjacent to its most iconic building – the beautifully imposing Bonython Hall facing North Terrace. Completed in 1936, Bonython Hall is the University’s main ceremonial building and provides a grand venue for public events.

While Sarah’s experience working in and around heritage buildings includes redevelopments at St Peter’s College, Wilderness School and the University of Adelaide, this project presented a unique set of technical, safety and logistical challenges.

As the needs of our clients evolve, we have challenged our teams to explore emerging technologies, which has led us to new ways of building, and the ability to respond to the most complex of client requirements.

Modular buildings are increasingly requested by clients seeking solutions to immediate needs, often brought about by rapid growth in their own organisations.

Without the ability to rapidly design, construct and install new infrastructure, our clients would not be able to provide continuity of services or supply to their markets. While the full design and delivery of high-quality, fit for purpose buildings over just a few months may seem daunting to many builders, Sarah’s modular team is characterised by a ‘can-do’ attitude, and a collaborative approach to working with clients, architects, and subcontractors to meet tight timeframes.

We have been working with modular methodologies since 2018, and now have a thriving construction centre based in Sarah’s warehouse, with a dedicated team and robust trade partnerships.

Sarah’s most recent modular project is a suite of classrooms for Westminster School – designed and delivered in only five months from project inception and installed over the Christmas holidays without any disruption to learning or safety concerns for the school community.
